Fred Espenak

Fred is an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he uses state-of-the-art infrared spectrometers to probe the atmospheres of the planets. This work frequently takes him to the world's highest observatories atop the Hawaiian volcano Mauna Kea. In 1991, he was a co-investigator of an atmospheric experiment flow on Space Shuttle Discovery. He is currently participating in a number of research projects including the monitoring of ozone in Mars' atmosphere, the detection of winds on Venus, Mars and Titan, and the measurement of hydrocarbons in the stratospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Espenak is perhaps best known for his work on eclipses. His two books, Fifty Year Canon of Solar Eclipses: 1986 - 2035 and Fifty Year Canon of Lunar Eclipses: 1986 - 2035 have become popular references on the subject. Espenak also publishes special NASA bulletins which provide detailed solar eclipse predictions and maps. He recently co-authored Totality Eclipses of the Sun with Mark Littmann and Ken Willcox. Espenak's interest in eclipses was first sparked after witnessing the total solar eclipse of March 1970. Since then, he has participated in nearly twenty eclipse expeditions around the world and has made predictions on thousands of eclipses. His astronomical photographs have appeared in both national and international publications, and he has lectured extensively to the general public on science, eclipses and photography. In 2003, the International Astronomical Union honored Espenak for his life-long work on eclipses by naming asteroid 14120 after him.

Naomi Pasachoff

She is a research associate at Williams College (Williamstown, MA) and holds an A.B. from Radcliffe College, Harvard University, an A.M. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from Brandeis University. She has viewed six total solar eclipses together with husband Jay Pasachoff. They are coauthors of science textbooks on the elementary, junior high, and college levels.

Patricia Totten

Pat Totten is a retired chemistry teacher turned freelance writer and photographer with a BS from Purdue University and an MA from Lehigh University.

She has traveled around the world chasing eclipses and other astronomical events, most recently to Antarctica for the total solar eclipse of November 23, 2003. Since 1972 she has traveled to eight total solar eclipses. She also enjoys skiing in the winter and biking in the summer and several years ago she hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
